Cannot wait to see this, am I right in thinking it will be on Blue Ray as well as DVD? If so I’m buying a Blue Ray player purely for it!
-
If after seeing this movie, i still have the same urge since 7 years ago; to leave this whole material world behind - then i’ll take it as a sign that I really should. The title of the movie can’t be more perfect. Looking forward to my heart being called out by nature!

when is this drifter trailer coming out?
-

Hurley wanted to show it first on their website but they are busy with US OPEN. Hopefully soon.
-
Does he surf in the film or is it just about him listing to his answering machine?
-

He catches a couple waves but it’s not your normal surf movie. It’s more about his journey than waves ridden.
-

Removing responses about the film?! Talk about freedom of speech or lack there of- I had a feeling you guys would do that though.

Eric-
I dont know which response you feel we removed. As the comment about “The Drifter” being the next “In Gods Hands” is in the Drifter Trailer post.
We love to hear all thoughts on our projects. -

Hey,
Didn’t see an answer to a question that was posted eariler; will the film be available on Blu Ray?
Thanks
-
Well…. amazing footage and rob is ripping as always… but…..
So cheesy and fake. Either make a fictional story-type movie or a surf vid. just another example of a conservative half-assed effort by the surf industry. Rob looks like he’s doing it tough in his Canggu villa with his electronic gadgets and latest sponsors gear.
overheard on the set… Rob “Did you get the shot already??? i wanna get my hair done!! my stylist is coming in ten!! this tent is too stuffy!!! I’m out of here….”
-
Wow Karl,
Such a hater. Maybe a little contrived, but at least the scenery, cinematography and narrative make it different from every other surf movie that has been copying Taylor Steele’s format for almost 20 years. I personally am looking forward to buying the dvd and checking it out in person if there is a road show.
-
My reply is to Karl,
Karl,
You are a complete idiot. This movie is great and Rob is great! -
Hey Karl,
Why would a slightly different format be half assed? Why couldn’t a guy with gadgets and sponsors ask himself questions? And that’s just to set the tone for the movie, noone said it actually happened that way. So yeah it’s not going to be a vid showing teenagers busting airs listening to punk rock music, those vids exist already and that’s fine.
I know I totally relate to the teaser, in a manner of speaking I’ve also seen myself paddling between 2 islands and asked what the hell am I doing? So we get those questions with Machado surfing Indo and probably some cool tunes….sounds good to me. And believe me if I feel they tried to go deep and didn’t quite make it, I’ll be the first to yell out half assed…. -

Surfing has so many facets for so many people, To drift along like a jelly fish in a empty sea, or go out there and live your dream, or at least chase it, you will never know if you dont go~!
So, Good on ya Rob, at least your aware enough to realize their is more to life then taking waves and getting your picture on the cover of the rolling stone.
Don’t know if you found any answer, but I’m sure you now have even more questions….
I never have liked the pro scene, or the pro surfers, even after 10 years on the long board tour, that A.S.P. comp crap just about zapped what soul I had left in me after some real life lesssons about death and re~birth, your dad was right, not many care, let alone remember who won what when….
I hope for your sake you return to Nihiwatu and Sumba and stay at Dato’s village, I am there for 2 months this season and would love to surf with you at God’s ( or Claudes ) Left.
Nihiwatu changed my life forever,I am proud to say all my actions of the last 8 years have been vindicated by the love and acceptance of the Sumbanies, Life takes you where you are supposed to be, everything has a reason and purpose, whats your Rob ? See what One man can do ? my I be so bold as to suggest a saying to remember, this is my credo now.. I help you, you help me, we help them, they help us~!
That’s is what surfing can give the world, the reminder that it is better to give, then receive…when you came out of that barrel at pipe at High five’d Slater, your man on man competitor in the final, you showed to me and my crew you see something bigger than SPORT working here. Also helping your friend with physical challenges surf, well my surf brother, you are the leader of your pack…lead them Rob, they will fallow, strive for a higher reason for giving and living rather then being a taker not a giver, You are a Giver, Know Lead them, they need guidance…the mags wont do it, Kelly wont do it, Andy wont do it, and the ozzies ? ya right….There’s my babbling ramble on your movie…I rate your Travel Doc (and that is what it is )…a big fat ”S ” for super soulful, you are going the right direction….at least in m y opinion…but then again, I am just a old washed up Long board kook that stumbled into my dream fantacy because I thought it was more noble to give.
It is all about the people we meet, I look forward to meeting you some day as I am sure our paths are side by side, they will cross….
Thank you for Drifter, it is what I needed to see to remind me that life is not…I this, and I that.
Do you remember the quote by Da Owl ? ” Give a wave, give a smile, make a friend, you never know, he might have a good looking sister ~! I love that quote…and yours, all about People…your strait there brotha from anotha..
T.S.
P.S. sorry for my crappy spelling and grammer, ditched alot of school, got bad grades, but killer waves~! eme anytime. -

I walked into this movie with no knowledge of its origins and no expectations. I only wanted to watch Machado surf because he is so effortlessly graceful and concise and then there is the cut-back and low five with Slater at Pipe with the title at stake. Call me sentimental but it’s one of those great sporting moments that sets Rob Machado apart. When I saw Taylor Steele’s name in the title credits though I did prepare myself for the ordeal of a great deal of staring into middle distance and asinine platitudes as seen in “in God’s Hands”. Sure enough there were those in spadefuls only supported by some new equally neurally grating devices - colour washing the platitudes written out calligraphically and the addition of a new state of being for the hero/surfer, that of a heavy lidded ennui (”I only wanna surf man [deep soulful sigh]“).
Our man later recovers his zest by connecting with the human family through a tribe of “noble savages” very much in the sense that a Byron or Shelley may have conceived of them. Shades of “The Thin Red Line” even, but just trite. There’s a vaguely sepia tinted A-team sequence where the now ennervated hero helps build a new water reticulation system complete with hand pump and storage tank for the pristine but work-belaboured villagers. If you’re not American this scene has an unpleasant resonance with previous movie rescues of the deprived and downtrodden by American errants. Will they sink into western vices now that they have been relieved of their gulag of daily water hauling? No doubt demon drink and television are next but with our hero’s soul safely rejuvenated, we are spared this sorry scene and we are soon at the airport for the denouement and a raft of uplifting sentiments that sound suspiciously like they were brainstormed by a platoon of bright young things at Nike (the new owners of Hurley) marketing after 3 cappucinos and a refocus session of pinball.
That being said the production value is spectacular. Some very talented people worked on this movie setting up richly coloured and visually stirring shots. I only hope they all knew they were working on what is essentially a very long advertisement for Hurley that dovetails as a rebranding exercise for Rob Machado in his post competitive career. Not that one can blame the guy. He still has to put food on the table for a long while yet and he still surfs like a poetically inspired ballistic missile.
In short, if you are a fan of Machado, watch this movie and somehow hang in through the interminable interludes between the surfing sequences. Else plug your ears so you can’t hear the syrupy dialogue and enjoy the beauty of Indonesia which doesn’t need any commentary to move one. Have surfing movies moved beyond the twin genres of no frills wave porn and revolting hagiographies of flawless Homeric heros with eyes permanently fixed into middle distance? The answer it seems is no.

I can’t use those big words or quotes from other movies, but when I saw Warner Brothers was involved(even a little), I knew we were in trouble. In a word, contrived.
I am the first in line to seek the end of the road and ditch all the petty influences of ‘our modern life’ as I want to believe was ‘Robs’ intention. Taylor however is on a different trip all together, and I have come to the conclusion I don’t like Taylor’s movies.
I want to believe that Rob wanted a more sincere less staged production. It’s so freakin bizare. And let’s face it, surfing, for anyone who has been at it for longer than 10 years(or longer), has been thrown off the cliff. I know it’s been happening all around us and I am just as responsible as anyone. It’s the price we pay I suppose. Sad. I keep thanking my lucky stars that I am old enough to remember going to the local community center and sitting in the crowd and being enthralled by ‘A Sea for Yourself’ or ‘Salt Water Wine’, before it all went Hollywood. I think surf flicks will for ever be crap anytime someone from Hollywood or the surf industry(ie, Quik or Billa) get their hooks in it. Those early movies set in motion a dream about surf travel and the wonderful life of being a surfer. Sure there were funny silly moments in those films, but they weren’t taking themselves so serious as this movie would have you believe. Now days, there are few movies that inspire one to dream, and The Drifter is not one of them.
I can’t get rid of it fast enough as I don’t want it as part of my collection. -
Is there going to be a 2nd version with just the surfing?
-
yes, its called drifter sessions and its coming out before summer
